Cafe Stepping Stone - Cartagena

#30-40 a, Carrera 10 #30102
Cartagena, Bolívar, Colombia

In our last moments in Cartagena, we decided to go to Cafe Stepping Stone.
The location is a little off to the side from the heavy tourist spots, which is nice. The feel outside and once you enter are quaint and humble. Upon entering, Buena Vista Social Club was playing on their speaker.

One of the things that makes Cafe Stepping Stone stand out is the basis behind their business. The cafe is run by three Australians, who's aim is to support the youth of Colombia rather than become a disruption in the neighborhood. They are partnered with FEM, a non-profit organization that focuses on empowering communities through sustainable developments. They have a training program for youth in the neighborhood to work and learn the necessities of a cafe/waiting job. From here they can go on to build their resumes and continue their path in future employment, in a country that may not have as abundant opportunities as others.

Cafe Stepping Stone is a nice change of pace, especially when used to the New York mentality. New coffee shops open weekly, sometimes initiating the threat of gentrification in many neighborhoods. It's great that this space is for the benefit of the neighborhood and the people in it.

(Also the coffee and food are verrry good.)
